Context

Aune Heggebo has become the first player to be charged with 'cheating the referee' under new FA rules, highlighting the importance of fair play in the Championship. His two-match suspension could have a significant impact on West Brom's attacking potential in the upcoming games.

Why is this important

Aune Heggebo's ban raises important questions about fairness in Championship football and the need to introduce VAR. The situation with his goal, which was scored with a possible foul, is causing discontent among Norwich City players and fans, which could affect the reputation of refereeing in the league. This incident may also set a precedent for other cases where players can be punished for deceiving the referee.

In the opening match of the season between Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion, with the score 0-0, West Brom striker Jimmy J-Morgan crossed into the opponent's penalty area. The ball, flying past Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic, hit Aune Heggebo's leg and, after touching his arm, flew into the net. The referees did not notice the hand-to-hand contact, and the goal was counted. This situation caused protests from the Norwich players, but referee Tim Robinson and his assistants did not see the violation, and West Brom led 1-0.

West Brom won 2-1 later in the match, but after the game Heggebo became the first player to be charged with "cheating the referee" under FA rules first introduced in the 2017-18 season. He was handed a two-game suspension on Thursday, raising questions about the fairness of the decision. The FA's official statement did not detail the reasons for the punishment.

West Brom insist the ball touched Heggebo's hand accidentally and they plan to ask the FA for clarification on how a player should react in similar situations in the future. FA rules allow disciplinary action to be taken in cases where a referee has been deceived, but only in situations where the player clearly intended to deceive the official.

This situation has once again put on the agenda a discussion of the use of video assistant referees (VAR) in the Championship.Despite VAR being used in Premier League matches, EFL clubs have rejected proposals to introduce it. In April, second division clubs scrapped the use of VAR for the 2026-27 season, leaving them without the ability to review such situations in real time.

Heggebo, who signed for West Brom from Norwegian club SK Brann for an undisclosed fee in 2025, will miss the next two matches: home against Burnley and away in the Karabar Cup against Newcastle. Following the announcement of the punishment, the club released a statement in support of its player, highlighting his character and virtue.

Some pundits and fans have criticized the FA for handing out such harsh punishment. Former Norwich striker Chris Sutton believes such decisions will make players think twice about scoring goals if they could fool the referee. In his opinion, it was important not to encourage cheating, and the punishment of the player was justified. However, others, such as former West Brom midfielder Richard Sniekes, believe the decision is absurd and needs to be reconsidered.

Experts such as Martin Cassidy of Ref Support UK welcome the ban, believing it will help stop similar incidents in the future, and insist the rules must be enforced more strictly to prevent players cheating. This situation makes it relevant to discuss the need for VAR in the Championship, since its absence leaves many questions unanswered.

What happens next

West Bromwich Albion plans to ask the FA to clarify the rules regarding such situations. This could lead to a review of the Championship's approach to disciplinary action, as well as discussions about the possibility of introducing VAR in the league. In the coming matches, the team will be forced to adapt to Heggebo's absence, which could affect their season outlook.
