Manchester City will “look for a new Rodri” - Maresca

According to Sports.

Context

Rodri spent seven seasons at Manchester City, where he became one of the best midfielders in the world. His departure to Barcelona opens up new opportunities for other players at the club, as well as a challenge to recruit new talent, which is especially important in the fiercely competitive Premier League.

Why is this important

Rodri's move to Barcelona was a significant loss for Manchester City as he had been a key player in the midfield, winning numerous trophies including the Ballon d'Or and the Champions League. His departure highlights the need for the club to find a suitable replacement to remain competitive in the Premier League and internationally.

• Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has discussed the challenges of replacing Rodri following his move to Barcelona, highlighting the need for effective recruitment as the transfer window closes.
• Man City will 'try to find the new Rodri' - Maresca - Yahoo Sports.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has said the club will be "looking for the next Rodri" after the Spanish captain left the team to sign for La Liga champions Barcelona. Rodri has become one of the world's best midfielders during his seven seasons at Ettihad, winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or, four Premier League titles and scoring the only goal in the 2023 Champions League final.

The 30-year-old led his country to World Cup triumph this summer and signed a four-year contract with the Blaugranas after the club agreed a payment of around £65 million. "How do we solve this problem? We will try to find a new Rodri, that's how it is," Maresca said. "[Before] Rodri came to us, he didn't win the Ballon d'Or, he didn't win the Champions League, he didn't win the Club World Cup. He came to the club and achieved a lot of important things."

Rodri made almost 300 appearances for City. He was in the final stages of his contract and although the club offered him an extension, negotiations were unsuccessful. Maresca added: "I was thinking on Thursday night when [David Silva] was here, everyone was worried, and when Kevin [De Bruyne] came in. When Sergio [Aguero] was here, everyone was worried [when he would leave], and Erling [Haaland] came in. [Fernandinho]? Rodri came in. When they leave, you have to do a good job of recruiting new players. They are all similar - David, Kevin, Fernandinho, Rodri, Erling - that's normal, that's change and that's not a problem, you have to continue and try to do the right things."

City look set to be busy in the remaining days of the transfer window, awaiting new players as well as those leaving. They have already signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a record £115 million. The club continues to actively discuss the signing of Moroccan Lille star Ayoub Bouadadi. BBC Sport reported that the club are also keeping hopes of signing Enzo Fernandes from Chelsea and are also interested in Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Liverpool's Alexi McAllister. Meanwhile, Tottenham have agreed a £75m deal for Brazilian winger Savinho and are also in talks to bring in City team-mate Omar Marmusha.

Asked if he was calm about the club's transfer activities, Maresca said: "I think that's the feeling for most clubs, not for all, because some clubs probably prefer to complete things at the beginning or end of the previous season. I think we are almost in the same situation as all clubs. There are 10 days left, hopefully we can do what we need to do."

“It doesn't help that there are players who for various reasons want to leave, that's for sure, but we have to adapt and we don't want to keep players here who don't want to stay, that's for sure. Probably the normal situation in a transfer window is that you have to wait until the last week because all clubs try to keep players until the last week and then sell them for more money. This is fine.

What happens next

Manager Enzo Maresca said the club will be actively looking for a new player to fill the void left by Rodri. With the transfer window closing, Manchester City must act quickly to ensure the squad is well strengthened ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.
