Why is this important

• Italia, il percorso verso il Mondiale passa da Firenze: con la Bielorussia per continuare a sognare.

Today at 18:15 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, the Italian women's team will face Belarus in the second leg of the qualifying playoffs for next summer's World Cup. After a confident 2-0 victory in the first match, the Italian team has an excellent opportunity to reach the final, where they will meet the winner of the Finland-Serbia pair (the Finns won the first match 3-1).

For the girls, under the leadership of coach Andrea Sonchin, this is a chance to continue the successful path they started in the first meeting. In that match, the Italians could have achieved a larger advantage, but in such matches you should always expect unexpected turns. Therefore, the team needs to show a high level of play, as they have in previous meetings at this stadium, where they have achieved success twice: in 2018, when they qualified for the World Cup, which they have not attended for 20 years, and in 2021, when the team qualified for the European Championship.

Although there is no direct qualification goal today, the game is key for the team's future. FIGC Commissioner Giovanni Malago will also be in the stands. Ahead of the match, Sonchin noted: "The girls are very mature, full of determination and understand the importance of tomorrow's game. They know that this qualification is built step by step."He added that he expects a more aggressive game from Belarus, but wants to see the same level of ball control as in the first match. “Our goal is to continue to develop our identity, to be a strong and fun team, and that means having the ball and enjoying the game.”

Striker Cristina Girelli also shared her expectations: "It's a beautiful stadium in a very warm and enthusiastic atmosphere. We want our match to be a celebration for the fans. We are determined to get to the World Cup and the crowd will give us strength. Tomorrow will be a very important step, we are all focused on the challenge ahead and on the long road that we hope will last until November."

The program of the return round matches of the first stage of qualification includes: Ireland - Kazakhstan (first match 8-0), Switzerland - Israel (first match 7-3), Serbia - Finland (first match 1-3), Austria - Kosovo (first match 2-1), Wales - Albania (first match 1-0) and others. The Italian team, expecting the support of their fans, is preparing for an important meeting with Belarus, where they hope for success and the opportunity to continue the fight for a ticket to the World Cup.

What happens next

If Italy successfully passes Belarus, they will meet the winner of the Finland-Serbia pair in the play-off final. This will be an important step towards participation in next summer's World Cup and an opportunity to showcase the high level of women's football on the international stage.
