Context

Camilo Duran, signed by Celtic this summer, has already established himself as a key player, scoring two goals in an important Champions League match. His experience of playing in the Champions League for Qarabag and recent achievements make him an important asset for the club in the fight for success in the tournament.

Why is this important

Celtic's 3-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs is significant for the team as it gives them a comfortable lead heading into the return leg. Camilo Duran, who became the hero of the match, demonstrated his high class, which underlines his importance for the club this season. It also strengthens Celtic's position as a serious contender for Champions League success.

Key takeaways

• Celtic hero praised for 'world class' victory
• Celtic won 3-0 over LASK in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stages, with Camilo Duran scoring two goals, earning praise from manager Martin O'Neill.

Celtic produced an outstanding performance last night to beat Austrian side LASK 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stages. The footballer who became the real hero of the meeting was Colombian striker Camilo Duran, who scored two beautiful goals and received rave reviews from the team's head coach Martin O'Neill.

Duran scored the first goal with a superb volley, sending the ball into the top corner of the goal. The second goal was the result of excellent team play as he completed a quick combination with a well-placed shot. The success has been particularly important for Duran, who was signed for £5.5 million in July after a successful season at Qarabag, where he scored five Champions League goals.

O'Neill told TNT Sports: "He's a brilliant player. We noticed him a long time ago and tried to sign him before we did. He's absolutely brilliant. I told him, I don't want to call him a world class player, but it was a world classic in every way. Not just because of the goals, but the way he carried himself on the pitch and helped the team come back defensively."

Despite the comfortable lead, Celtic struggled as LASK created several chances and scored twice, only to have the goals disallowed for offside. Moments like these show that the Austrians can still pose a threat in the return leg.

Celtic were eliminated at the play-off stage last year by Kairat Almaty and the club have had problems in the Champions League qualifying rounds in recent years, including eliminations by AEK, Cluj, Ferencvaros and Midtjylland. Durant's arrival and the record transfer of Casper Hogue have changed the atmosphere in the team and O'Neill, who led Celtic to the Double last season, stressed the work is not yet done.

"I think it was a very tough game for us," he added. "We won 3-0, but they have a very good team. We have a lot of work to do, but we gave ourselves a chance. They scored a goal in the first minute that was ruled out for offside. They started the game very strongly and it took us 10-15 minutes to get into a rhythm. Even then the game was going both ways. At the end of the day, if we score three goals, it helps. Probably next "It will be a similar game. I'm sure we can score and that will be the key. I don't want to downplay the victory - it's a great result for us, but there's still a lot of work to do."

What happens next

Celtic now prepare for the return leg against LASK, where they will be looking to maintain their lead and secure passage to the next round of the Champions League. Given the team's strong performance, coach Martin O'Neill will likely be encouraging his players to continue their successful streak. If Durant continues to show this type of form, it could have a significant impact on the rest of the season.
