Hearts fans can be pleased after the team's comfortable 6-2 win over Inverness Calydonian Thistle. The team's newcomers got a chance to prove themselves, and many of them lived up to expectations. Ugandan winger Rogers Mato and French midfielder Tom Renault particularly stood out. However, one of the best players of the meeting was James Wilson, who returned to the team after a loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he did not have time to make his debut for the main team. The 19-year-old striker looks like an important part of head coach Wout Vranken's plans.

Wilson made his breakthrough aged 17 in the 2024-25 season, scoring six goals in 32 appearances for Hearts. Not only did he help the team avoid relegation, but he also made his debut for Scotland in March 2025, becoming the youngest player in the country's history. That summer, new head coach Derek McInnes gave Wilson plenty of time on the pitch during the League Cup group stage. However, with the start of the championship and the active fight for the title, it became more difficult for Wilson to find playing time. He started only once, against Motherwell, and came on as a substitute five more times.

On the final day of the transfer window, Tottenham signed him ahead of Arsenal, and it was perhaps not surprising that Wilson decided to move to London. As part of Spurs, he was put on the reserve list twice, but played only for the youth team, and the club did not activate the option to buy him.“I've seen a lot of questions about it, but for me it was the experience of training at a club that's probably in the top six in England,” Wilson says of his time in London. "I trained with world class players, took advantage of great conditions and gained experience from the bench. It made me a better player and now I hope to come back and show that."

Wilson was an unused substitute in Vranken's first four matches, which all ended in defeat, but then featured in three consecutive games and scored against Inverness with a close-range rebound. "He played well," Vranken said after the match. "James is also smart enough to know what we want. He's not as physical as some of the other strikers but he can read the game and see what we want and try to do it."

Wilson's link-up with Claudio Braga was noted and his movement created more threat than the striker he replaced, Amadou Ba-Sy. On his first goal in over a year, Wilson said: "It's an amazing feeling. It's been so long since I've felt that way. I just followed the coach's instructions - just be myself, run after everything and press. I stayed in the middle of the box. That was actually the goal I scored, wasn't it? I feel like I've worked hard and prepared for this moment."Wilson came on in the second half with the score 1-0, being chosen to replace Pierre Landry Cabore, while Vranken noted that Ba-Sy was still not adapting to his methods. "I'll talk to him and see how he understands it and how he handles the situation," the coach added. "I don't want to hear excuses because we don't live on excuses." Braga is typically Hearts' main striker and he also scored against Inverness and has been heavily linked with a move to another club.

Has Wilson shown that he is ahead of Kabore and Ba-Si? "He was very good," said BBC Radio Scotland pundit Allan Preston. "He showed more desire and drive than Ba-Si, who still has a lot of work to do. Wilson looked strong, interacted well and deserved his goal for his work."

What happens next

Given Wilson's successful return, he is likely to receive more playing time in future Scottish Premier League matches. Head coach Vought Vranken may consider integrating Wilson into the starting lineup, especially given his potential. Hearts fans will be closely monitoring his development and impact on the team over the remainder of the season.
