Russian striker of the Sri Lankan club Blue Star Alexey Shesternin spoke about his unique path into the world of football. In an interview, he shared how his passion for travel and chance encounters led to him becoming a player for one of the strongest clubs in Sri Lanka.
“This is a story that lasts several years, a story of rethinking oneself in some sense,” Alexey began. He says that even before the pandemic he began to travel actively. In 2024, he traveled to India, where he visited Goa and fell in love with the place. It was there that he accidentally met a man who advised him to try himself in local football.
Alexey was connected with another person who had access to the Calangute team. He went on trial, however, due to the lack of a core group of players, he was not accepted into the team. “I was not greeted with a smile and after a few days they asked me not to come again,” he recalls.
Failure did not break Shesternin. Later he met the goalkeeper of the Sporting Goa club, who invited him to a trial. “The training went well, and after two weeks the coach said that he liked me and that they saw potential in me,” he shares. However, a couple of days before the meeting with the club president, he suffered a serious ankle injury, which left him without a contract.

Despite this, Alexey continued to keep in touch with the coach. After four months of recovery, he learned that the Indian League 2 had introduced a ban on foreign players, and his chance of a contract with Sporting Goa disappeared. However, he did not lose hope and continued to follow the team from Penza.
“I was worried about the team, which eventually took third place, but only two clubs qualified for promotion,” says Alexey. At the end of the season, the coach left the team, and Alexey decided to write to him asking him to recommend him to the Dempo club, where the coach had previously worked.
The following year, he again went to Goa, where he played a bilateral match. “I was pretty good and realized that I wanted to catch on at this level,” says Shesternin. However, he was not invited again and continued to keep in touch with the coach, who eventually invited him to try his hand at Sri Lanka.
“I collected highlights and sent them. The club manager said that the management liked me and they were ready to invite me to the upcoming season of the local Super League,” concluded Alexey. His story is an example of how perseverance and self-belief help you overcome difficulties and achieve success in sports.
