Tottenham, on the other hand, will have to cope with the pressure and expectations after this disastrous start to avoid a repeat of the poor experience of recent seasons.

Tottenham Hotspur started the new Premier League season with a crushing 3-0 defeat to Brentford, despite investing heavily in the summer transfer window. After avoiding relegation in the last round of last season, Tottenham spent £237 million on six new players, but hopes of a quick turnaround were quickly dashed by a disastrous performance in London. Early goals from Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Yanelt, as well as Michael Kayode's third early in the second half, ensured the Bees deserved victory. Sky Sports commentator Jamie Redknapp praised Brentford's "total football".

Tottenham debuted with five new signings, but it was club record signing Mamadou Sangaré who caught the eye, assisting the opening goal and controlling play in midfield. Tottenham's defeat could have been even more painful had Igor Thiago not missed his penalty in the 55th minute. Tottenham failed to have a single shot on target in the first half and finished the match with just 0.47 expected goals compared to Brentford's 3.96, highlighting the need for potential attacking reinforcements with the arrivals of Savigno and Omar Marmouche from Manchester City. However, even these two players will not be able to turn things around for Tottenham, who had a terrible performance that demonstrated why the team finished in 17th place two years in a row.It was Tottenham's joint heaviest defeat to open a Premier League season, leading Redknapp to call De Zerbi's new team a "team of strangers". Brentford, in turn, will be buoyed by this convincing win as they aim to qualify for Europe this season after missing out on qualification for the Conference League on goal difference last season.

Key points from London: 12th minute: BRENTFORD GOAL! The hosts deservedly open the scoring, Lewis-Potter finishing off an excellent pass from record transfer Sangare. 17th minute: PEST! Thiago heads against the crossbar, but Collins was offside at the time of attack and the hosts continue to dominate. 33rd minute: BRENTFORD GOAL! Richarlison and Bergvall lose the ball, allowing Jensen to shoot at goal, his shot is poorly parried by Kinski, and Janelt finishes the ball into the net. FIRST HALF! Tottenham failed to get a single shot on target in a terrible first half, with Fernandes and Bentancur coming on for Gallagher and Bergval. 49th minute: BRENTFORD GOAL! Kayode scores the third goal from close range on the finish after Sangare's shot. 55th minute: TIAGO MISSES THE PENALTY! Bentancur fouls Sade, but Thiago hits the post.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi commented: “We were suffering physically, but we knew it before the game.We were not ready to fight for combat sports; we made a lot of mistakes in timing the pressure. We came too late and lost too many duels to compete with Brentford. I'm sorry for this, I'm sorry for the defeat. We know we have to improve our fitness and organization because there were a lot of new players. But this is the first game; this is part of our journey. We knew that with a lot of new players, we needed two things to become a team: soul and style of play. Today, I think there was soul, but in the end we didn't fight properly for single combat. Brentford are one of the most important teams in the Premier League in terms of match-ups, but with fair play. I believe in my players."

Tottenham captain Archie Gray added: “It was simple: we lost too many duels. They simply outplayed us in every part of the field. We need to watch this game again; that's the main thing we need to do better. They just outplayed us. For some reason, we weren't ready to fight like they were. It's on us. For the fans, they were incredible. We were unlucky to disappoint them in the first game, there are no words for it. I don't think we have any excuses. We all have to look at ourselves in the mirror and say it wasn't good enough."

What happens next

Tottenham will have to reconsider their strategy and possibly strengthen their attack to avoid a repeat of last year's failures. At the same time, Brentford, inspired by this victory, will be looking to continue their successful performance in the next matches of the season. It is expected that both teams will actively work to improve their results in the upcoming Premier League games.
