Brighton & Hove Albion continued their impressive form into the 2026-27 season with a convincing 4-0 win over Lithuanian side Kaunus Zalgiris in their opening Conference League group stage match. In this match, Georginio Rutter became the hero, scoring two goals and making a significant contribution to his team's overall victory.

The match took place at the Amex Stadium and it took Brighton 41 minutes to break their opponents' resistance. Rutter's goal was initially disallowed as the referees ruled the ball had gone out of bounds, but after a call to VAR the decision was reversed and the goal was awarded. After this, it became clear that Brighton were aiming for a big win.

The second goal came just before half-time, with Rutter assisting Jack Hinshelwood, who, returning to the side after a lengthy absence due to injury, fired the ball into the net with his first touch. The second half continued in the same vein, with Brighton leading overwhelmingly. Hinshelwood could have scored again, but his header was parried by the visiting goalkeeper. However, Rutter soon scored a double, scoring again after Osman's pass.

Matt O'Reilly, after hitting the post, soon made it 4-0 with a header from 18-year-old Egyptian midfielder Younes Ibrahim, who was making his Brighton debut. Brighton are now favorites for the competition, with three of the previous five winners of the trophy coming from England, including West Ham in 2023 and Chelsea in 2025.

To reach the group stage, Brighton had to go through a two-leg play-off against Norwegian club Tromsø, where they achieved a 4-0 win in the second leg after a goalless draw in the first. Brighton fans have already witnessed eight goals in two home Europa League matches this season, while their side also lead the English Premier League with 18 goals from six matches. Hurtzelera and his team continue their outstanding season in their second continental competition, following wins over Aston Villa 4-0 and defending champions Arsenal 3-0 in the Premier League, as well as a comeback against Manchester United, where they won 3-2 to knock their opponents out of the Carabao Cup.Brighton have scored 29 goals in 10 matches in all competitions and are set for a long run in the Conference League.
