Alvaro Carreras runs against fate

According to Mundodeportivo.

Context

Alvaro Carreras, after being a key player for Real Madrid in pre-season, now faces a challenge from the club's new signing, Marc Cucurella. Over the past two years, Real have spent heavily on players in one position, highlighting the importance of their performances in La Liga. Carreras will have to demonstrate his worth to retain his place in the starting lineup.

Why is this important

The situation with Alvaro Carreras highlights the high level of competition at Real Madrid, especially in light of the recent signing of Marc Cucurella. Despite Carreras being the team's top performer in pre-season, his place in the starting lineup could be in jeopardy. It also reflects the club's ambitions in La Liga, where Real Madrid are looking to strengthen their position.

Key takeaways

• Alvaro Carreras runs against fate.
• Alvaro Carreras has been Real's best player in pre-season, but his place in the first team is under threat due to the arrival of Marc Cucurella, who recently made his debut.
• Álvaro Carreras corre contra su destino.

Football is full of ironies: no one has spent more time on the pitch than Alvaro Carreras at Real Madrid this pre-season, but his place in the first team is under threat. In five friendlies, Carreras has accumulated 413 minutes, ahead of the likes of Andrei Lunin (402 minutes) and Fede Valverde (379). Carreras was top of the class in terms of appearances in August, but that does not guarantee him a place in the starting line-up when the serious part of the season begins.

Carreras' problem lies with his rival Marc Cucurella, who is Real's new signing for €55 million from Chelsea, with a possible extra €5 million in bonuses. In just two years, Real spent €105 million on two players in the same position, which shows the club's serious intentions.

Alvaro Carreras was able to take advantage of the absence of Cucurella, who returned to training only on August 10, after celebrating victory at the World Championships in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Carreras played against Leganes, Fiorentina, Ferencvaros, Deportivo and Schalke, while Cucurella was recovering from rest.

Cucurella, who made his debut against Schalke in the 61st minute, replaced Carreras, who had just played a great match. His last significant play involved a modern pass: he rounded defender Becker, ran to the corner of the penalty area and delivered the ball accurately, allowing Carlos Espi to score with a header. Carreras left the field after scoring an assist, leaving behind the paradox of the player who had spent the most time on the field in pre-season making way for the one who would likely challenge him for a place in the starting lineup.

A year ago, the situation was completely opposite: Carreras was a newcomer, a €50 million transfer who was expected to take a place in the starting lineup. He did not hide his emotions upon returning to the club, which he left in 2020 after three seasons in Real Madrid's youth team.

Carreras's first season did not live up to expectations, despite a promising start. The team has gone through many changes: the arrival of Xabi Alonso, his departure, and then the departure of Alvara Arbeloa. Too many coaches and changes for a team that has decided to invest again in the left-back position.

Carreras has now achieved his first victory in the fight for a place in the starting lineup, but his advantage has arisen due to the lack of an opponent and may disappear as soon as Cucurella returns to form. This is the paradox of Carreras' summer: he runs faster than everyone else to fill a spot that may already be reserved for another player.

What happens next

As the season begins, Carreras will have to fight for a place in the starting lineup, especially with the return of Cucurella. The Real Madrid coach is expected to closely monitor the form of both players to determine who is better suited to play in La Liga. Competition could be a key factor in the team's success in the upcoming season.
