Ruben Amorim appointed new head coach of AC Milan

AC Milan have officially announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. The former Sporting CP and Manchester United coach has signed a three-year contract with the Rossoneri, which runs until June 2029. Amorim has been out of work since January when he was sacked by United after 14 months as head coach at Old Trafford. The Portuguese replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who left San Siro last month as part of a major overhaul of the club after Milan failed to qualify for the Champions League. “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of them,” Amorim said. "I know exactly what this club stands for: history, prestige and an incredible fan base around the world. This is a challenge that I accept with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colors represent. I can't wait to get started and feel the passion that drives AC Milan every day." Milan had a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League after a strong first half of the year, but the team slowed down in the final matches, winning only five of their last 13 meetings (one draw and seven defeats), eventually finishing in fifth place. In fact, the club finished the campaign outside the top four for the first time in their history in this competition. Amorim will have to get the team back into title contention next season and also compete for the European Cup - the 41-year-old coach led United to the final of that competition in 2024-25, where they lost to Tottenham. As United manager, Amorim made 63 appearances in all competitions, recording 24 wins, 18 draws and 21 defeats, and his sacking came after he appeared to criticize the club's hierarchy in a post-match press conference. In the Premier League, Amorim achieved just 15 wins from 47 matches, giving him the worst winning percentage (32%) of any United manager in the competition.
