Context

A. J. Brown, formerly of Philadelphia, was acquired by the Patriots in exchange for a first-round draft pick, highlighting his importance to the team. His experience and ability could be key to improving the New England Patriots offensive line, especially in light of past offensive disappointments.

Why is this important

The joint practice between the Patriots and Eagles shows significant progress in New England's offensive strategy, especially with new quarterback Drake May. Successful chemistry between him and AJ Brown could be key to the team's effectiveness in the upcoming season. It also highlights Brown's importance as a central figure in the offense, which can change the team's dynamic.

Foxboro, Massachusetts. — AJ Brown didn't even have to slow down when Drake May's pass hit him on a crossing route. Brown had a breakthrough opportunity in front of him, and he quickly rushed along the sideline.

At any New England Patriots practice, this would be an interesting moment that would bring the crowd to their feet. But on this day, everything Brown did had special meaning.

What mattered was that the Patriots' offense was able to handle the Eagles' defense, led by Vic Fanjo. What was important was that, at least for now, Brown fit perfectly into the role the Patriots hope he will fill.

This was the original idea of the club. That's why the Patriots were the only team willing to trade a first-round pick to the Eagles for Brown. The hope was that he would help take a very good offense to the next level. If Wednesday's joint practice outside Gillette Stadium is any indication, everything is going according to plan.

"He makes my job a lot easier," Brown said of Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. “He creates favorable matchups for me, moving me around the field.”

Can AJ Brown help the New England Patriots return to the Super Bowl?
Robert Mays and Derrick Klassen.

A year ago, Philadelphia's offensive disappointments prompted a trade to New England. However, this move carried many risks for the Patriots. The first picks in the draft are a steep price to pay for a receiver who will turn 30 next summer and come off a less than stellar season (78 catches for 1,003 yards, the second-lowest total of his career).

The hope was that he would become May's real number one, that in difficult moments he could turn to Brown.

This happened on Wednesday. At one point, the Eagles broke through the Patriots' offensive line with a blitz, and May was running out of time. He threw off his back foot towards Brown and the receiver caught the ball.

But for the most part, everything was in rhythm for the Patriots' starting offense, which handled well against an Eagles defense that had a tough day.

Among the questions about the Patriots' offense, the average practice wasn't ideal. There were issues with pass protection and blocking blitzes, and it's difficult to gauge when a play would result in a tackle on the quarterback in practices like this where tackles are prohibited. And the running game didn't show much wiggle room, although again it's hard to gauge when runners aren't allowed to tackle.

However, there have been enough difficult moments to raise concerns about the run game.

While the addition of Brown received most of the attention this spring, the Patriots' main goal this summer was to improve their running game. They believe they will face more defenses with two tall safeties and need to do a better job of utilizing that on offense.

On a day like Wednesday, when the offense looked like one of the best in the NFL, could the running game be the only limiting factor for this offense?

“It’s probably hard to say,” coach Mike Vrabel said. "It could be better. But it's not live, so you don't know if guys are breaking tackles and receivers are trying to catch a safety three yards behind the line of scrimmage. ... I think there's a fine line in trying to figure out what the run game looks like and what it's going to be like, and there were good moments. There were times when it was one player, but still not a good game."

So, while the run game remains a concern for the offense, the passing game looks good enough in these August practices to overcome any early woes.

Brown easily beat his former team. Romero Dubs made an incredible move over a defender in the end zone. And May made passes, demonstrating his accuracy when throwing in the central part of the field.

“He's very special and he makes my job a lot easier and just learning how he sees the game and just tuning in with him,” Brown said of May. "... He has a lot of talent in his arm. He can throw the ball anywhere."

Wednesday also served as a reminder of how far the Patriots have come in a couple of years. In August 2024, the Eagles visited these same practice fields and dominated the Patriots in humiliating fashion, leading to a 4-13 season for New England.

Two years later, the Patriots are Super Bowl contenders. And if the offense continues to play like it did Wednesday, the Patriots could be in the mix again in February.

What happens next

If AJ Brown continues to perform like this in training, it could lead to him playing an active role in upcoming matches. His chemistry with Drake May is expected to develop, which could greatly enhance the Patriots' offensive potential. The team will be looking to use Brown to achieve its goals for the season and potentially return to the Super Bowl.
