2026 World Cup: Canada beats Qatar 6-0 to record first win of the tournament
Canada scored its first victory at the World Cup, defeating Qatar 6-0. Jonathan David scored three goals and Qatar finished the match shorthanded.
Canada has finally won the 2026 World Cup, albeit at a price. In the second match of the group stage, Les Rouges defeated Qatar 6-0, recording their first victory in their history at the tournament. Qatar finished the game with nine men, receiving two red cards, and were unable to stop the Canadian attack.
Canada quickly opened the scoring - in the 16th minute, Kyle Larin sent the ball into the goal after a rebound. Jonathan David then scored a first-half brace, first scoring with a volley in the 29th minute and then finishing in stoppage time. Qatar's problems began in the 33rd minute when Homam Ahmed was shown a straight red card for a foul on Tajon Buchan on the edge of the penalty area.
Things got worse for Qatar less than ten minutes into the second half when Canadian midfielder Ismael Koné was forced off the field on a stretcher after a collision with Assim Madibo. Many players were upset when Koné left the field, including Madibo, who was later red carded for the foul. Madibo's red card left Qatar short-handed, making Canada's attacking task even easier.

Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné in the 59th minute, scored five minutes later, raising Koné's shirt in celebration. However, the goals continued to fall. In the 75th minute, Jacob Schaffelburg set up Mohamed Manaya to score his own, increasing the lead to 5-0. And two minutes into second-half stoppage time, Jonathan David completed his hat-trick to make the final score 6-0.
Despite his success, David's reaction to the hat-trick was muted. He was clearly upset when Koné was carried off the field and his teammate may have been on his mind. After the match, the two teams scuffled a bit, with Canadian coach Jesse Marsh and Qatari coach Julien Lopetegui sharing a friendly handshake.
2026 was only Canada's third World Cup, and Les Rouges had an all-time record of 0 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses in the tournament heading into the match. Canada got its first points with a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, but the team was looking for a win. Now she finally did it, and did it to great advantage. Canada had 31 shots on goal, 10 of which were on target. They had 78% of the ball and were awarded 19 corners, while Qatar were limited to just two shots - both in the first half and neither of them on target. The win moves Les Rouges top of Group B while Qatar, who drew with Switzerland last week, are bottom.
