Manchester United could face a big decision ahead of the transfer window closing regarding defender Nouassar Mazraoui as AC Milan continue to monitor his situation. According to Caught Offside, the 28-year-old defender is still being considered for Milan's squad as the club evaluate their options to bolster their defence. In this context, the figure of Ruben Amorium, who now leads Milan and knows Mazraoui well from their time together at Manchester United, plays an important role.

Amorium is a fan of the Moroccan and has previously described him as a "technically gifted" player, which adds further significance to the situation, especially as the market becomes increasingly tight. Sources say Milan's interest in Mazraoui has fluctuated throughout the summer, consistent with general uncertainty over their plans to bolster their defence.

An additional fact is that "Mazraoui changed his agent to Panthera during the transfer window, indicating his intention to leave Old Trafford." While this is not conclusive proof, it raises the level of concern for his future. From United's point of view, the contract situation looks pretty strong. Mazraoui only signed with the club in August 2024 and his deal runs until 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position. There is no obvious pressure to sell the player unless the offer is tempting.

This is where the logic becomes clearer. Mazraoui represents the type of player that elite clubs value as the season progresses. He can play at full-back or full-back, as well as as part of a back three, making him extremely difficult to replace without adding extra cost. According to the source, "He is not always guaranteed a place in the starting line-up, but his tactical versatility gives United valuable support in various defensive areas."

For this reason, any potential departure must be on United's terms. “With Mazraoui still having two years left on his contract and capable of filling multiple positions, any sale would need to be at a price that allows the club to properly replace him.” This is the key point in this whole situation. As a Manchester United fan, I would like to be careful about this. Not because Mazraoui is untouchable, but because the club has made too many unjustified mistakes in managing its squad in recent years.Selling useful, experienced players before squad depth has been properly restored is becoming a bad habit, and Mazraoui fits the profile of a player one might regret losing in November when injuries set in. He's not the star the team is built around, but every serious team needs players who can multi-task well. If he leaves for a modest fee, United will typically have to spend more to replace his flexibility, not to mention his experience. This is a bad deal.

There's also the usual problem of former connections influencing transfer talk. Amorium's attachment to him makes sense and the reunion story is an easy sell, but United shouldn't be helping another club solve their personnel problems unless the return is significant. If Milan want him, let them pay him properly. From a fan's perspective, it should be simple: keep it unless the offer is so great as to allow for a clear improvement. Anything less seems like just another short-term solution disguised as smart planning. United have had enough of these situations already.

What happens next

The situation with Mazraoui's transfer may develop in the coming days, especially given the closure of the transfer window. If AC Milan makes a formal offer, Manchester United will need to evaluate it in the context of their needs and financial capabilities. At the same time, the interest of other clubs such as Bayern Munich could also complicate the situation.
