Context

Renato Gauchot, as Gremio's head coach, plays a key role in the formation of the team and its strategy. His experience and understanding of Brazilian football can help the club find the optimal balance between local and foreign players, which is critical to success in Brasileirao.

Why is this important

Renato Gauchot's criticism of Gremio's dependence on foreign players highlights important aspects of team dynamics and adaptation. Gremio continues to face the problem of a large number of foreign players in its squad, which currently includes 11 players born outside Brazil. Head coach Renato Gauchot raised the issue again after the draw in the derby with Inter last Sunday.

In his comments, Gauchau was "sad" about the team's over-reliance on foreign players: "You come here and in one corner there are two or three speaking one language, in another there are three or four speaking another. I think that is a mistake. Just because the CBF has allowed more foreign players, it doesn't mean you should recruit them indiscriminately."

The coach also discussed how foreign players are adapting to Brazilian football. "You take a foreign player and it's not his fault, but he needs to adapt. It takes five or six months for him to get to know his teammates. The coach has to come here with a magic wand and solve all the problems."

As part of Gremio, in addition to the mentioned 11 foreign players, the Argentinean Kanneman has already received Brazilian citizenship and is not counted when calculating the limit. However, the team has exceeded the limit of nine foreign players who can be included in Brasileirao matches, which will drop to eight in 2027.

The team's recent recruits, Croatian Krovinovic and Capverdian Jovan Cabral, both speak Portuguese. Colombian Envemorado and Argentine Nardoni arrived at the beginning of this season. The rest of the players were already in the lineup. The language barrier is still a problem for Amuzu. Gremio attracted attention when it announced the signing of Ghanaian but Belgian national winger Francis Amuzu in February last year. He speaks fluent French and English, but cannot yet communicate in Portuguese. According to Renato, this doesn't help: "Take Amusa for example. How long has he been here? A year and a half and he doesn't speak Portuguese. You need to be around him all the time. You come to a country where you don't speak the language and you have to adapt."

Currently there are foreigners playing in Gremio:

• Argentines 🇦🇷: Kanneman (with Brazilian citizenship), Nardoni, Pavon
• Paraguayans 🇵🇾: Vilasanti, Balbuena
• Colombian 🇨🇴: Envemorado
• Peruvian 🇵🇪: Noriega
• Dane 🇩🇰: Braithwaite
• Croatian 🇭🇷: Krovinovic
• Belgian 🇧🇪: Amuzu
• Capverdian 🇨🇻: Jovan Cabral

Will the team be able to change the situation? Renato recorded three draws in three matches in his last spell as Gremio head coach. Tricolor is currently 18th in the Brasileirao table with 31 points.Their rival Inter, also in the relegation zone, has one point more. Corinthians (32) and Mirasol (33) are the other teams closest to them. Grêmio will play again next Sunday (18), hosting sixth table team Cruzeiro at the arena.

What happens next

Gremio will likely be forced to rethink its transfer strategy to reduce the number of foreign players in the squad. This could include a focus on local talent and the development of a youth academy. With upcoming changes to Brasileirao's foreign player limit, the club will need to adapt to remain competitive.
