According to information from the Greek publication Sport24, cited by the Scottish The Scotsman, the Rangers club is not giving up the idea of signing left-back James Pendrice, despite two rejected offers from AEK Athens. Rangers have made a loan-to-buy offer, but the rent price falls short of the Super League club's expectations, although there remains cautious optimism among those involved in the deal.

The 27-year-old Scot came through the academy at Partrick Thistle and made his Premier League debut at the end of the 2015-16 season. He had spells on loan for East Fife and Livingston before taking over the Jags first team following their relegation to the Scottish Championship. Pendrice ultimately did not renew his contract and returned to Livingston ahead of the start of the 2021-22 season. This time the team played in the top division, and the defender regularly appeared on the field over the next three years.

Hearts signed him on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 and a brilliant season at Tynecastle saw him sign for AEK for £2m a year ago. Over the past season, the defender played 33 matches, alternating with Stavros Pilios. While the Albanian came on in the Greek Super Cup final against OFI Crete, the Scot was left on the bench as the team lost in the penalty shootout.

Pendrice has been told to find a new team to secure playing time and Rangers, who are currently considering signing Jayen Meghoma, must step up their efforts following Tuur Rommens' injury. Rommens has excelled since joining from Westerlo and was the first choice at left-back until an injury suffered against Hibernian sidelined him for the next eight weeks.

Versatile Dujon Sterling is likely to be a temporary replacement when Rangers face Jagiellonia in the final Europa League match. However, the club need to find a permanent solution amid the volatile situation at Ibrox. While Pendrice may not be as exciting a player as Rommens, his Scotland experience could add stability to the back line. He is known for his exceptional stamina, energy and aggressive attacking connections, making him a valuable asset in transition situations.

Rangers are yet to win under Derek McInnes and the delay in the defender's transfer could complicate their situation with St Mirren visiting this weekend. It is important to complete the deal as soon as possible in order to strengthen the team before important matches.

What happens next

Rangers are likely to continue negotiations with AEK Athens as they seek to reach an agreement on Pendrice's transfer. If the club can meet the financial requirements, this could lead to a successful completion of the deal, which would have a positive impact on their seasonal outlook.
