Context

Rangers have already signed nine new players this summer, but results under new manager Derek McInnes leave much to be desired. Given the current situation, new signings could be key to achieving the club's ambitious goals this season.

Why is this important

Andrew Kavanagh's expectations for new signings highlight the need for Rangers to improve their results in the Scottish Premier League. Given the poor start to the season and the defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Europa League, the club urgently needs to strengthen its squad in order to regain confidence and improve its position in the table.

Rangers chairman Andrew Kavanagh has said he hopes the club will make between three and five new signings before the transfer window closes, saying he is not happy with the team's early-season performances. The Ibrox club have already signed nine new players this summer but they only have one point under new manager Derek McInnes after two matches in the Scottish Premier League.

In addition, the team is behind Polish club Jagiellonia in the first match of the third qualifying round of the Europa League, losing 1:2. Kavanagh told shareholders that the club's transfer policy this season has been "clumsy" but they are actively working to make it a success.

“There is still a lot of work to be done,” he told an open forum in Glasgow. "I don't like to put specific numbers, but I hope that three or four more players will come to us, and some may leave us."

Rangers host Jagiellonia in the return leg on Thursday and the winner of that pairing will face Northern Irish champions Larne or Georgian side Iberia Tbilisi in the play-offs. "It's unfortunate that we have a few important games to play before the window closes, but that's the reality," Kavanagh added. “When we joined the club about a year ago, our ambition was to deliver consistent wins.I realize we're not there yet; I'm more optimistic now than I was a year ago. We could look back at how things have gone in the first three games and start complaining, but we're not going to do that. When we arrived, we realized that second place and even worse results had become the norm for the club and we must change this, but it will take time."

Kavanagh also stressed that he was not the only one in the room, attending the meeting with CEO Jim Gillespie and shareholder Paraag Marathe. Gillespie commented on the appointment of McInnes, who narrowly missed out on winning the title with Hearts last season, saying: “You can choose a Pep [Guardiola]-style manager or a [Jurgen] Klopp-style manager - we wanted a Klopp-style manager who will play an attacking style. Derek has been on our roster for a long time and we believe he fits the style and culture of our club."

He also confirmed that the club is seeking clarification from the Scottish Football Association regarding the VAR decision which led to a penalty being awarded to Hibernian in the 1-2 draw. “I thought there had to be a clear and obvious violation to go to the judge, but I didn’t see that,” Gillespie added. "We need a strategy for the development of referees and VAR. My question to the SFA is: 'What is the improvement strategy?' We must make improvements.

What happens next

In the return match against Jagiellonia, Rangers will be looking for a win to advance to the play-offs, where they will face either Larne or Iberia Tbilisi. Success in this match could be a catalyst for new signings and improved team morale ahead of the continuation of the season in the Scottish Premier League.
