Nico Gonzalez believes his move to Newcastle United this summer was the best decision he has ever made. The Spanish international has made a strong start at his new club, signing a long-term contract in August for around £52 million after spending 18 months at Manchester City.

At the age of 24, Gonzalez made 59 appearances for City in all competitions, including 40 as a starter, scoring four goals, but soon found himself of no use to the team. Newcastle signed him after Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes left the club to sign for Tottenham and Arsenal respectively.

Niko quickly adapted to the new conditions, finishing sixth on the team in the number of successful passes (155), despite the fact that he played only four matches. He played a key role in Newcastle's Premier League campaign under new manager Matthias Jaisle. Gonzalez said the atmosphere at St James' Park, which he experienced as an opponent, played a major role in his decision to join the club.

"Those moments [of the first game] were full of emotion. Leaving City and coming here was the best decision I could have made," Gonzalez told Sky Sports.

Jaisle has eight points from his first five Premier League games as Newcastle manager - the best start for a club manager since Allan Pardew's nine points at the start of 2011. Victory over Coventry City in the next match would give Jaisla a record 11 points from his first six games, something not achieved since September 2007 under Sam Allardyce.

During his time under Pep Guardiola, Gonzalez ranked fourth in the team in the number of duels won (56), successful passes (2,908) and duels won (212). However, he was unable to establish himself in the first team and with the arrivals of Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Ayoub Bouaaddi this summer, Nico realized it was time to move on and seek new challenges away from the Etihad Stadium.

"It was a huge opportunity for me. I obviously played at the best club in Manchester City, but I think Newcastle have made great strides in the last few years and have even more potential. We are a great club.

The best thing is not being in the best club; The main thing is to enjoy football and show your best qualities while helping the team. I looked at my options and Newcastle was the best," Gonzalez added.

What happens next

Newcastle United will continue their Premier League campaign and Gonzalez looks set to play an important role in the upcoming matches. The next match against Coventry City could be an opportunity for the team to improve their results and set a new record for coach Matthias Jaisle.
