FC Twente goalkeeper Mark Hamm will travel to Gibraltar on Thursday to take on the Lincoln Red Imps in the Conference League. The club from Gibraltar has a goalkeeper from the Netherlands, and the story of his transfer is interesting. It all started with a conversation on LinkedIn that brought Hamm to this small country. “My mother, oddly enough, suggested: “We have an apartment in Spain, just half an hour from Gibraltar?” says Hamm.
In addition to Hamm, the Lincoln Red Imps also feature several players with Dutch passports, such as Christian Rutjens and Yuljani Pervsteling. However, Hamm's story is especially remarkable. Last summer, when Lincoln was also making its way into the Conference League, Hamm was more than five thousand kilometers away from his team, sitting at a computer in Lanaken. He followed events in Abu Dhabi and hoped to return to Europe. Unfortunately for him, no offers were received from Belgium and the Netherlands.
Inspired by his mother's suggestion, Hamm decided to write to the Gibraltar clubs via LinkedIn. “I sent about fifty messages,” he says. As a result, he contacted the coach of the Hound Dogs club, who was just starting his journey in the Gibraltar National League. Hamm, who signed the contract on salary and bonus terms, decided to take a chance. “Respecting the team, it was not a top-level team,” he says. But he quickly became a prominent player.
Hamm was at his best in the last cup match against Lincoln. After the game, Lincoln's technical director approached him and asked about his plans for the next season. “I was delighted when I heard of their interest,” adds Hamm. A few months later, he signed with championship team Lincoln.
Hamm now realizes how different the levels of football are in such a small country. The Hound Dogs were played by football players who played sports for fun and had a day job. "Sometimes someone would miss training because they had work or just didn't feel like it. It wasn't taken seriously because most of the players had amateur contracts," he recalls. In Lincoln, everything is different: the team works at a professional level, and only a few players combine football with other work. "It's a completely different world," said Hamm, who now has to compete with Jaylan Hankins for a starting spot. On Thursday he will take the field against his compatriots FC Twente.
