Context
Morgan Rogers, signed by Chelsea this summer, has already demonstrated his worth by scoring on his debut. His physical strength and ability to link up with teammates such as Palmer and Pedro make him a key player for the team in the Premier League. Chelsea are counting on Rodgers to be an important part of their attacking strategy this season.
Why is this important
Chelsea's derby win against Fulham underlines the successful start to the Xabi Alonso era and demonstrates the potential of new signings such as Morgan Rodgers. His debut goal and his link-up with other players such as Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro suggest Chelsea can look forward to fresh ideas in attack. However, questions about the team's defense remain relevant, which requires the attention of the coaching staff.
Key takeaways
- Fulham 2:3 Chelsea: How new signings and Palmer helped.
- Chelsea, led by Xabi Alonso, started with a strong 3-2 win over Fulham, where new players showed their worth, but questions about goalkeeper Robert Sanchez remain.
- Fulham 2 Chelsea 3: How did new signings and Palmer give Alonso a flying start? Is Sanchez a problem?.
The Xabi Alonso era at Chelsea began with a brilliant victory. The London derby against Fulham at Craven Cottage featured five goals, numerous scoring chances, exciting attacking football and some questionable defending from both teams before the visitors triumphed 3-2. Alonso could have been pleased with Morgan Rodgers' debut goal and Col Palmer's return to form, but he also had to be wary of how easily Fulham broke through his side's defence.
How have Chelsea's new signings fared? Of the nine new players signed this summer, only two started at Craven Cottage. These were the club's most expensive acquisitions - Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix. Both players have Premier League experience and were bought to contribute straight away. Alonso and the club's management can be pleased with the way they started against Fulham. Lacroix, bought from Crystal Palace to bolster the defence, won two aerial challenges in the first three minutes, one of which led to Joao Pedro's opening goal. In the center of a back three, he used the ball wisely, defending calmly and constantly communicating with his teammates.
As for Rodgers, his interaction with Palmer and Pedro was at a high level, creating many chances. His physical strength and ability to move the ball added a new element to Chelsea's attack.Chelsea's third goal was an example of his willingness to take on less glamorous tasks, which also underlines his importance in the team.
However, what is the level of concern about Sanchez? Early in the match, Robert Sanchez showed his lack of confidence by taking a long shot under minimal pressure that went wide. On his bad days, it affects the entire team's defense, as happened in the 14th minute when he took too long to consider a pass from Josh Acheampong, resulting in a corner. Although he is capable of making impressive saves, his mistakes and carelessness make him inconsistent for a team with such ambitions.
As for Palmer, he showed he was back in form by making a superb pass for Pedro to score his first goal of the season. His dynamics and ability to close down opponents' passing lanes have once again made him a threat on the pitch. At the same time, his injuries last season raise concerns about his health this season.
What was the reaction to Fernandez? After coming on as a substitute in the 65th minute, his every touch of the ball was met with boos from the Fulham fans. It was his first Premier League match since the World Cup semi-final where he became the center of attention. Despite this, he was able to complete 17 of 19 passes, but did not make a significant contribution to control the game.
What's next for Fulham? They next face AFC Wimbledon in the Caribou Cup, while Chelsea take on Luton in the same tournament.
What happens next
Chelsea have important matches ahead in the Premier League, where the team will need to improve their defensive actions to avoid easy goals conceded. Xabi Alonso is expected to continue to work on his tactical formations to maximize the potential of new players including Rodgers and Lacroix. Success on offense must be balanced with solid defense to ensure the team can score points in future games.
