FIFA condemns racist abuse directed at IShowSpeed at match

FIFA has launched an investigation into an incident involving streamer IShowSpeed and a fan at the World Cup match between Argentina and Cape Verde on Friday. IShowSpeed was broadcasting the game live and was heard asking a fan wearing an Argentina uniform what exactly he was saying to him. The fan, speaking Spanish, allegedly told IShowSpeed, who is black, to "go cry at the zoo."

"FIFA strongly condemns racism, hatred and discrimination in all forms. These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup or in society at large," FIFA said in a statement on Tuesday. "FIFA was made aware of an incident involving a fan and #IShowSpeed at Miami Stadium during the Argentina v Cape Verde match on 3 July 2026 and we immediately launched an investigation. The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect. It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world, and anyone who acts in a way that undermines these values is not welcome in our football."

IShowSpeed and its representatives have not yet commented on FIFA's investigation. The 21-year-old American streamer, known for his passion for football, has over 50 million subscribers on YouTube, 45 million followers on Instagram and 47 million on TikTok.

In a separate incident, France star Kylian Mbappe on Monday condemned a Paraguayan senator for racist remarks she made following Paraguay's defeat to France in the World Cup round of 16. Celeste Amarilla posted a series of racist comments on X after Mbappe scored the decisive penalty in France's win over Paraguay on Saturday, mocking the French captain's background, upbringing, education and appearance. France have reached the quarter-finals and will face Morocco on Thursday. Mbappé called Celeste Amarilla, a senator from Paraguay's Radical Liberal Party, a "vile woman" who "does not deserve" to serve in Paraguay's Congress.

“With your irresponsibility and outright racism, the whole world has already forgotten the journey and historic efforts your players made in this World Cup,” Mbappe wrote in X. Late Monday, Amarilla published an open letter in French and Spanish on social media, saying its problem was with the player, not the country of France. She wrote that she regretted hurting Mbappe with "the same kind of abuse" that she herself received as a mixed race woman and that she had deleted her post. However, she also demanded an apology from Mbappe and threatened legal action if he did not retract his comments.

The Paraguayan government released a statement condemning Amarilla's remarks as "inconsistent with the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity that our country promotes." It added that the senator's comments do not represent either the Paraguayan government or the people of Paraguay.
