James Penrice's debut for Rangers came at a difficult time for the club, which had failed to win four games in a row at the start of the season. Penrice's arrival did not cause much excitement among fans, with many expressing displeasure at the move of another former Hearts player. However, with regular left-back Tuur Rommens injured, Penrice quickly proved his worth to manager Derek McInnes. The day after signing his contract, he took to the field and not only scored, but also provided an assist in a match against St Mirren.

“It was probably a dream debut,” Penrice told former Hearts team-mate Andy Holiday on Premier Sports. "It's been a crazy week. I don't think it can get any better than this."

Rangers, although unconvincing in the first half, which saw them lead 2-0, did give St Mirren a chance to get back into the game when they scored before the break. However, in the second half, 27-year-old Penrice became a symbol of the team's improvement, providing a constant threat to the opposition's defense from the left flank. This was especially evident in the 52nd minute, when he rushed in from the flank and made a perfect pass to Jeidy Gassam.Penrice scored himself two minutes later, finishing off a loose ball from close range to extend Rangers' lead to three goals.

"For James Penrice to score and put in an outstanding performance in his first game for Rangers is another bonus," former Rangers striker Stephen Thompson told BBC Radio Scotland. "You could hear the mood of the fans change inside the stadium. This win will boost the morale of the whole team. It's a lot of positives for Derek McInnes."

One such positive development was Penrice. The Rangers coach knows it's just one win and one good performance for Penrice so he shouldn't get too comfortable. However, McInnes, who worked with Penrice at Hearts before his move to Greece, was happy to praise his new player. "James came here with a certain freshness," he said on Premier Sports. "He plays with great enthusiasm but also has quality. His defense was good, his decisions were right, his energy - he understands what it means to play for this club. The more players we have like that, the better. I'm very glad the club allowed us to sign him."

What happens next

With a successful debut, Penrice is likely to be a key player for Rangers in the coming matches. The team will be hoping for his consistent performances, especially in light of the injury to their main defender, which could lead to improved results in the Scottish Premier League.
