• Elliot Watt remains central to Motherwell's plans.

Motherwell midfielder Elliot Watt has received an immediate four-match ban after pleading guilty to breaching Scottish Football Association (SFA) disciplinary rules. The decision stems from his comments following the match against Celtic in May. Taking to social media X, Watt, 26, described the decision to award the late penalty as "the worst VAR decision in history". The penalty was converted by Kelechi Yehenacho after Nicholson himself was found guilty of fouling, giving Celtic a 3-2 win at Fir Park on 13 May.

Watt, who opened the scoring in the match, was accused of breaching disciplinary rule 72, which states that players must not “criticize” decisions made by referees or make comments “that may bring the referee into disrepute.”

Motherwell FC were also charged with a similar offense and fined £5,000 for a social media post that said: "As the football world mocks our game, we just need to draw a line and change our focus." In response to the fine, the club expressed "extreme disappointment" at the SFA's decision. The club said in a statement: “The club is extremely disappointed with the outcome of the hearing regarding the notice of complaint received by the club from the SFA.The notice related to a social media post and associated video posted following our final home match of the 2025-26 season. The club has requested written clarification on this decision, after which we will contact our external legal advisers to discuss next steps."

SFA head of refereeing Willie Collum said in his regular review of key events that the penalty was the right decision. Then Hearts head coach Derek McInnes, whose side failed to clinch the title on the final day, also criticized the decision, calling it "disgusting". His hearing is scheduled for July 22.

In Motherwell's final match last season, a 1-0 win over Hibernian, Watt was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, meaning he will miss five matches. However, Watt will be available for Motherwell's upcoming Conference League fixtures when they face Faroese side Havnar Boltfellag in the second qualifying round on July 23 and 30. The midfielder, who was named in last season's PFA Premier League Team of the Year, has also attracted the attention of Turkish club Samsunspor amid rumors of a possible transfer.

What happens next

With Watt suspended, Motherwell will have to adapt to new conditions and look for alternative options in midfield. The club may also consider strengthening their squad ahead of future matches to compensate for the loss of a key player. It is important that the team remain focused on their goals in the Scottish Premier League and do not lose confidence in their abilities.
