Liverpool continues the race for a world-class striker - summer

According to Sports.

Background

PSG's Bradley Barcola has emerged as a target for Liverpool, highlighting his status as one of Ligue 1's top striker prospects. His future at the club remains uncertain, making a potential move to the Premier League particularly relevant in this transfer window.

Why this matters

Liverpool's interest in Bradley Barkola underlines their desire to strengthen their attacking line, especially in light of the possible departure of Mohamed Salah. The Barcola situation also reflects general trends in the Ligue 1 football market, where clubs such as PSG may be open to deals if players are not in their plans.

Key Takeaways

• Liverpool continues their summer race to sign a world-class striker.
• Liverpool continues to pursue Bradley Barcola from PSG, facing competition from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, while remaining in the dark about the player's future and PSG's willingness to sell him.
• Bradley Barcola remains central to Liverpool's plans.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool remain actively searching for a new wide striker, with PSG's Bradley Barcola emerging as a key figure in those discussions. In the latest edition of Anfield Index's Media Matters programme, experts Eddie Gibbs and Lewis Steele discussed Barcola's move, noting that competition from Bayern Munich, Arsenal and the uncertainty surrounding PSG's willingness to sell him only adds to the intrigue.

While there is no clear favorite at the moment, Steele stressed that Barcola's future is one of the most talked about topics for Liverpool this summer. The discussion began with Gibbs mentioning that Bayern had already shown interest in Barkola as a possible replacement for Michael Olise should he leave the club. Steele was quick to add that there are a lot of uncertainties surrounding the transfer: “There are a lot of ifs and maybes.”

He noted that an important part of the situation is that Barcola's position at PSG remains "quite uncertain." It is this uncertainty that continues to connect Liverpool with the French international. During the discussion, Steele repeatedly returned to the number of unresolved issues surrounding a potential deal, emphasizing that "we don't know what will happen with this yet."

He also confirmed the level of competition Liverpool will face: "Liverpool, Arsenal and now Bayern... it will be interesting to see how that unfolds." Despite the presence of competitors, Steele was unable to identify a club that had a tangible advantage. "I wouldn't say either club is significantly ahead in the race at the moment from what I've heard about Liverpool and Arsenal."

This assessment is encouraging for Liverpool fans, especially as negotiations with PSG are expected to be difficult. Steele explained that several factors still need to be resolved before any deal can get any real momentum: "Are PSG going to let him go?" - he exclaims. And then he poses another important question: “Is Liverpool ready to pay the amount that PSG wants if he does leave the club?”

In conclusion, he noted that the situation remains uncertain. Rather than presenting Barcola as a deal close to completion, Steele described it as a transfer saga that could define the rest of the window. Gibbs also questioned what alternative plans Liverpool might have if Barcola does remain in Paris, highlighting the club's need to replace Mohamed Salah's opening at right-back.

Steele acknowledged that Liverpool will have alternatives, but his comments imply that Barcola remains the most prominent option currently being discussed. He concluded: "I think this will be the story of the summer transfer window, no matter how it happens." This clearly reflects Liverpool's position: the club remains at the center of the discussions, neither club has firmly established control of the race and PSG still hold the biggest cards. Liverpool fans may have to be patient for now, but as Steele noted on Media Matters, Bradley Barcola's future is far from resolved and Liverpool continue to monitor developments closely.

What happens next

Liverpool will have to closely monitor the development of the Barcola situation, especially in the face of competition from Bayern Munich and Arsenal. If PSG decides to sell the player, this could lead to increased negotiations, but there is still a lot of uncertainty, which makes the situation intriguing for all parties involved.
