Context

Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's new manager, is targeting a successful start to the Premier League by focusing on young players and their integration into the first team. With signings such as Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Muñoz, Iraola is aiming to build a competitive team capable of challenging for top spots in the Premier League.

Why is this important

Andoni Iraola's Premier League debut for Liverpool against Newcastle will be a big moment for both him and the club. Given the emphasis on integrating youngsters such as Jeremy Jacquet, this could change the team's dynamics and approach to the game this season. Success in this match could set the tone for Liverpool's entire Premier League campaign.

Key takeaways

• Andoni Iraola is preparing for his debut in the Premier League
• Andoni Iraola is preparing for his debut as Liverpool manager against Newcastle with an emphasis on integrating young players such as Jeremy Jacquet into the squad.
• Andoni Iraola to make bold Liverpool call ahead of Newcastle clash.

Andoni Iraola is just days away from taking charge of his first Premier League game as Liverpool manager. The team's pre-season performances have been quite impressive and some young players could be given significant roles this season under the Spaniard's guidance.

Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni are two academy graduates who look set to feature regularly in the team, but with James McConnell remaining at the club, we can expect a big focus on youth at Liverpool this season. However, with a few weeks left in the summer transfer window, plans could change, especially if Richard Hughes orchestrates a number of new signings for the club.

However, decisions now need to be made on who will play in which positions, especially with the season opener against Newcastle looming. Iraola has decided that Jeremy Jacquet will partner Virgil van Dijk this season. Liverpool have signed three new players in the summer so far: Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo. Each of them must provide the necessary support to Iraola's team.

With the arrival of Jacquet and Araujo, the club's fans were wondering who would partner Van Dijk in central defence. Araujo was also signed to strengthen the right flank, but since he has more experience and is used to playing in a system similar to Iraola's tactics, many fans believe he would be a better option. However, according to BBC Sport, Iraola is set to make a bold choice and use the Frenchman as a replacement for Ibrahim Konate.

"Before the weekend, the question of who would partner Virgil van Dijk in central defense for Liverpool's Premier League opener against Newcastle on Sunday was very much an issue," journalists reported. "But after his impressive performance in the friendly against Como, where he also scored, Jeremy Jacquet looks set to start alongside the Liverpool captain."

The fact that Liverpool's main transfer strategy over the last few years has been to acquire young players with great potential to prepare for the future means that there are increasingly fewer veterans in the team to help the youngsters adapt. Of course, Van Dijk, Alison and Wataru Endo are still in the squad, but with all three contracts expiring in June 2027, the number of experienced players at Liverpool will be dwindling. Most of the players Liverpool have signed over the past few years are already ready to break into the starting XI, but for a player like Jacquet, who is just 21 and has never played in England, being Konate's successor is a significant challenge. His performances in pre-season show he is ready to take over the position, but his recent return from injury could also be a cause for concern. We hope that the Frenchman can live up to expectations and prove his readiness to play alongside Van Dijk.

What happens next

With the opening of the season approaching, Iraola must make key decisions about his team composition. What matters is how young players like Jacquet and other newcomers adapt to the demands of the Premier League. We should also expect possible transfers before the window closes, which could affect the team's strategy in the coming weeks.
