Context

Andoni Iraola, as a coach, faces challenges related to developing players and strengthening the team. His decisions to use young players such as Ifeanyi Ndyukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye could impact their future development and careers at the Premier League club.

Why is this important

Liverpool, addressing problems in the center of defence, are demonstrating a proactive approach to improving their squad. The return of key players such as Virgil van Dijk and the successful debuts of new signings such as Jeremy Jacquet strengthen the club's defence. This is important for a team striving for high results in Premier League football.

Key takeaways

• £30m transfer of Richard Hughes solved a serious problem.
• Liverpool are tackling their central defense crisis with new signings and returns.
• £30m Richard Hughes signing has solved big Liverpool problem.

Liverpool appear to have finally solved their problems in central defence. A few weeks ago, Andoni Iraola was forced to use the inexperienced pairing of Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Tallu Ndiaye in central defence, as well as the forgotten name of Luke Chambers. However, with the return of Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet making an impressive debut, the defensive situation began to improve. We should not forget about the signing of Ronald Araujo on loan, as well as the imminent return to the field of Giovanni Leoni. Liverpool's defence, previously seen as vulnerable, is now taking on a more confident appearance.

However, Liverpool still have problems on the right flank. The return date for Connor Bradley, who is seriously injured, is still unknown and Iraola is certainly keen to avoid using midfielders as replacements in that position. This opens the door for Jeremie Frimpong to make his mark, unless the club decides to add a new player in the transfer market. The 25-year-old was signed from Bayer Leverkusen last summer after Liverpool activated his £30 million release clause. However, the Dutchman struggled with form and fitness throughout his first season at Liverpool, eventually missing out on selection for the Netherlands' World Cup squad under Arne Slot, who used him in a more attacking role.

However, pre-season training under Iraola has shown a different picture, with Frimpong particularly impressive at right-back against Como on Sunday at Anfield. The former Celtic man now looks ready to shine in the 2024/25 Premier League under Iraola, having finally found his role. "Frimpong was also praised for his superb tackle which prevented a dangerous chance in the Como goal," reports the Liverpool Echo. "At a time when the Reds are short-handed on that side of the pitch, it was an encouraging performance from the versatile former Bayer Leverkusen man. Questions remain about where he is most effective and whether the position suits him, but Iraola clearly views Frimpong as an adventurous right-back. If he can avoid injury, he has every chance of making his second season at Anfield much more productive.

This rise in form could not have come at a more opportune time. Liverpool have yet to adequately replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. Bradley was injured and unstable, and the same could be said for Joe Gomez. Finally, Frimpong looks like just the right player to solve the problem on the right flank for the new Spanish manager.

What happens next

Given the current problems on the right flank, Liverpool could consider a new signing in the summer transfer window. If Conor Bradley is unable to return to action, this will create further opportunities for Jeremie Frimpong. The club should closely monitor the transfer market to ensure it has the necessary squad depth.
