Who qualified for the knockout stage and which teams were eliminated from the World Cup?

The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is drawing to a close and the battle for the knockout stages continues. For the first time in the history of the tournament, 48 teams are participating in the World Cup. They were divided into 12 groups of four teams, with the host countries - the United States, Mexico and Canada - being seeded in the draw. The 12 group winners and 12 runners-up will automatically advance to the round of 32, joined by the top eight third-placed teams based on points and goal difference from the group stage.

Six teams have already secured their place in the playoffs by winning both opening matches. Four teams have now been eliminated from the tournament, losing both of their matches. A total of 16 teams will leave the competition after the group stage.

It is also the scene of two classic World Cup finals: Brazil's victory over Italy in 1970, when Carlos Alberto scored his famous 4-1 team goal, and Argentina's 3-2 victory over West Germany in 1986, when Jorge Burruchaga scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute.

Mexico and Canada will each host 13 matches, and the United States will host 78. Starting with the quarterfinals, all remaining matches will be played in the United States, with the final taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
